Best bahn mi I've had in North America. Period. Bread is crispy. Flavor is excellent. Service is amazing. Never busy. Hope the owner sticks around. Longer on future visit is.
The owner will have an amazing story to tell if the store is not busy. -

Que Huong is owned and run by an 84 year old Vietnamese woman. She is super nice, friendly and welcoming. The place mostly sells banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), but there are a few other Vietnamese dishes as well. It's really small with only a couple of tables, so I've only ever had banh mi here, and only for takeout.
I've had the assorted meats ($3.50), the vegetarian ($4), grilled chicken ($5) and grilled beef ($5) banh mi. All are excellent. The grilled meats ones are a little slim on the meats, so I feel that the assorted meats one (which has Vietnamese sausage (cha lua), ham, and paté) is the best bang for your buck. All come with pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, chili peppers, and aioli. If you buy 5 banh mi, you get 1 free.
I have been going to this place for years, and recently I noticed that the aioli is a little more sour and more mayonnaise-like than before. I'm not a fan of Hellman's/Kraft/traditional mayo, so I liked the aioli of days past better.
Service can be a bit slow at times, but this is understandable, because I doubt that I'd be all that quick when I'm in my 80s.
There's an article from the Ottawa Citizen written by food critic Peter Hum about Que Huong that is posted in the restaurant. It writes about how the owner fled Vietnam after the war, and lived in a Malaysian refugee camp before arriving in Canada. I love supporting small local businesses, but I particularly love supporting people who have overcome great adversity.
So if you love banh mi, come on down and check this place out. It's small, modest and not fancy, but serves some good banh mi. Cash only though, so bring your coins! -

Coming from Toronto, this is my favorite Vietnamese sub place in Ottawa! Place is small but cozy, own by a sweet lady. The bread is fresh and crispy. The grill pork is tender and delicious! Highly recommend!

Best place to taste Bánh Mì - Vietnamese sub. Various meals in menu and friendly owner who is chef as well.
I bought two "Bánh Mì tht nng" for taking out when we visited Ottawa 2 days ago. It was yummy.
Recommend take out and cash only. -

I was craving some nice, warm banh mi and saw the good reviews for this place. When I walked in, I saw two tables, a big menu on the wall (with photos!), and a counter with a "CASH ONLY" sign. Some Vietnamese tv was playing moderately loudly, but the lights were off behind the counter, and I kind of wondered if anyone was there. Then I saw a small "ring for service" sign next to a bell. I ring it, I hear someone in the back, and the old Vietnamese woman comes out a minute later.
I order a grilled chicken banh mi. She'll ask you if you want spicy or non-spicy. I chose spicy, but it's really not much spicy at all. She makes the sandwich to order, and she does it behind the counter, but it's not a glass counter so you can't see what's going on. That's okay, because the sandwich is DELICIOUS. The bread is just crispy enough on the outside but nice and soft on the inside, and whatever mayo she uses is delicious. There isn't an overflowing amount of meat - the bread/filling ratio is just right.
So yeah this place is very hole-in-the-wall but don't be sketched out. Just remember to bring cash!
